A Window in Time

See the effects of millions of years of erosion on a landscape of sedimentary rock.

For millions of years water and wind broke down rock and deposited it here. Many of the rocks exposed in Canyonlands were deposited near sea level.

About 20 million years ago movement in the earth’s crust began to uplift this area. Today the average elevation is over 5,000 feet.

Today’s landscape is one of erosion. As the land rose, the Colorado and Green rivers began to cut into the rock. Each layer exposed steps further back in time. The rock at the current river bed was deposited approximately 300 million years ago.

Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch is not only the most famous arch at Arches National Park, but it's also "the most famous natural stone arch in the world," according to the park. It's also the largest free-standing arch in the park, with a 46-foot-high, 32-foot-wide light opening. Landscape Arch is the longest arch in the park

On geologic timescales, Delicate Arch will exist for only the blink of an eye. But don't despair—although all the famous arches will crumble and collapse within a few thousand years, replacements will continue to be sculpted out of Utah's bedrock for a very long time to come

The trail to see Delicate Arch up close and personal is 3 miles (4.8 km) roundtrip and climbs 480 feet (146m). Along this steadily uphill trail, you'll also pass the Wolfe Ranch cabin and a wall of Ute Indian petroglyphs.

Double Arch

Delicate Arch is instantly recognizable for most people across the globe, whereas the much larger Double Arch may be most famous for its use in the opening sequence of "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."

Enjoy the 0.6-mile out-and-back trail to Double Arch. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 16 min to complete. This is a very popular area for hiking and walking, so you'll likely encounter other people while exploring.

Slickrock

Part of the hike to Delicate Arch is on the area’s well known “slickrock" as seen here. Contrary to the name, slickrock provides excellent traction in most cases.

The name "slickrock" was used by early settlers of the area to describe the sandstone because of the low traction between horses' metal shoes and the rock's sloping surfaces. The same is true today for cyclists who use shoes with metal cleats. Slickrock also becomes slick when wet.

The Legend of Dead Horse Point

According to one legend, the point was once used as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the mesa. Cowboys rounded up these horses and herded them across the narrow neck of land onto the point. The neck, which is only 30 yards wide, was then fenced off with branches and brush, creating a natural corral surrounded by precipitous cliffs. The cowboys then chose the horses they wanted and, for reasons unknown, left the other horses corralled on the waterless point, where they died of thirst within view of the Colorado River 2,000 feet below.

Walking Sticks

Unfortunately, the walking sticks are not included in the room. They are privately owned. The original, the darker one on the right was found on a beach in Northern California about 40 years ago and remains as it was found - it has not been reshaped. The second stick is a copy of the original.
